Pet Peeve #1 - Cell Phones

Now before I begin, yes, I do believe there are good uses for cell phones; business people, emergency use situations and possibly people who don’t spend any time at home and actually need to take phone calls, emphasis on the actually.
Now 14 year olds and cell phones? What in the world is that! At the current moment I hardly receive calls at my house and when I was 14 I think I hardly ever used the phone - there were more worries then if I could talk to Billy or Bobby or Johnny or whoever. But lately it seems more and more 14 year olds have these stupid things for stupid reasons and most times it’s their parents who are paying for the unnecessary gadgets.
Case in point. I was at the mall either early this week or late last week — it doesn’t really matter when though and was near the food court on my way out. Two young girls walked by and I’m putting them in the 14 year old category as I don’t see them as being much older. All of a sudden one of their phone’s rang. Thus began the loud talking and ignoring of her companion friend. It was clearly another friend on the other side of the phone as anyone within 50 ft of them could easily hear the conversation. Basically it went like this:
OH I’m at the mall with Whoever
Yeah we’re just walking around
Blah blah blah talk talk loud talk I’m so important
I think it’s the general “cell phone ignorance” that when the phone rings the person answers and talks as loud as possible to the person on the other end. Not only does this disturb the people around them but most times the “cell phone usee” is now ignoring the other people in their party.
Also how important can something really be that a 14 year old needs a phone? What’s the latest crisis for them? A sale at Bluenotes or Stitches? Susie and Mikey broke up? I just don’t understand it.
The way I see it for the most part — if I’m out and you’re not with me and I didn’t call you before I left there’s a usually a reason for it. I don’t need a cell phone to keep me “connected” to everyone — I should be out with those people I need to be connected with. And if not, I have a quarter and there’s pay phones around.

Totally agree with you on this one. Sadly, we’ll probalby end up getting one, soon, though. We have had a few emergency situations where we’ve needed one, and with running the store, people sometime sneed to get ahold of us when we aren’t there. I do admit that the free nights and weekends would be good for calling people long-distance.
Kids have no business having them, though.
Now, on the other hand, my friend’s son has some kind of weird cell phone where the only people he can call on it or receive calls from are the numbers that hsi parents have programmed in (from their phone), so he can call his mom, his dad, his home phone, and his grandmother, and, of course, 911 I can see how that would be handy for parents needing to keep track fo their kid. I don’t see it as a necessity, but it is at least more justifiable. Me, personally, I’m not goign to let me kid runa round to places where I don’t know where she’s at to the point that I couldn’t contact her if need be..

I like my cell phone … it has become a musician’s best friend. Like any other tool, it depends on how it is used. A stupid 14 year old playing with a band saw is also a bad idea.

Both of you have valid points but they both fit into my first initial claim of valid uses, one for business/emergency and the other for your band stuff — basically a business even more so now that you have your CD.
My main problem is with the kid’s having them. I think a band saw is more useful to a 14 year old as at least they could possibly learn valuable skills with it and start building stuff etc. Whereas the cell phone has no real purpose to them — especially if they are telling their friends they are at the mall or where ever.
There are proper uses for cell phones and when used properly they are handy devices but for the majority of time and majority of users now they are used more as a toy then as a vital piece of technology.

Yah, this I’ll agree with! I can’t stand them, most of the time. I use ‘em when I have to, but really, when I’m out having a nice dinner or trying to watch a movie, or relax, the last thing I want to hear is phones ringing constantly or people carrying on loud conversatiosn for no reason.
I mean really, why would anyone want to have their relaxing dinner at a nice resteraunt interrupted by their ringing phone and subsequent conversation? To me, that’s not someting to strive for.
I think the one that takes the cake, though, is the lady who was in the public restroom at the store the other day, having a crap and talking on the phone.

I just got a new cell phone. Has many many gadgets and I find it handy to have around when I’m in boring situations. I was in a stupid code of conduct meeting the other day. I played Texas Hold’em through the whole thing..haha.
But yeah, I hate kids that have them, just to be cool. I use mine instead of paying for a house phone…works great.

oh my god… Susie and Mikey broke up!?!?!
I wish someone would have let me know…
haha
I also use my cell as a house phone and also find it beneficial, call waiting, message centre, separate lines for Jeannette and I it’s nice… and the nice thing is, if you don’t want to talk to someone, you can always say you were north of the trading post and the service was bad…

maybe i am being old fashioned
and the boys with their underwear showing…
i don’t understand it

Apparently its cool to act and look stupid among our younger generations today. What am I saying I wore my pants backwards when Kriss Kross came out.
