Roads or Fireworks?

Well I just enjoyed the second occurrence of fireworks in 4 days as that’s one of the luxuries of living in a border city. On Friday we had our Canada Day celebration and today the good ole US of A had their 4th of July kerplooey explosions galore.

On paper, looking at both of the cities that share in these celebrations the Ontario Soo’s fireworks should outshine, outlast and out perform our friends to the south Soo Michigan. That’s not the case. Even though our population is approximately 75,000 people and theirs is approximately 16,500 we get shown up year after year. I think everyone on both sides of the border comes to expect it.

Now what are the reasons behind this? Do the city officials here in Soo Ontario just know that our counterparts to the south will outdo us that they don’t put much effort into funding our celebration as we’re lucking out anyway with getting 2 shows 4 days apart.

Or do city officials in Soo Michigan make that oh so tough decision of where to spend their budget money for the year. Pave the roads or more fireworks? And trust me, making weekly visits to the Taco Bell, some of the roads over there need some work. Or do the Americans (sorry American friends) just like blowing stuff up? KERPLOOEY!!!

Either way the fireworks today literally blew everyone away. Houses that are quite a few blocks away from the waterfront could hear the loud booms and had their windows shake with every explosion. They were pretty impressive for our smallish cities.

Maybe both cities should work together to actually put on a show to top all shows. Possibly put in equal amount of money and then on midnight of July 2nd (the inbetween of July 1 and July 4) have one crazy ass firework show that lasts for more than 5 minutes — as that’s when it seems both sides die out.

I think it’s something to think about. Okay, maybe I’m dreaming but it’d sure piss off the retirement buildings on the far end of the waterfront.

    Hey Curt

Actually some rich old lady died in Soo Mich like ten years ago and left a whole wack of money to the Soo Michigan Fireworks Commitee.
Thats why they have bigger and longer ( fireworks that is) displays than ours.

Americans are also better at blowing stuff up than we are, its in the up bringing or something
