I’m Not Sniffing Your Butt, Honestly

Well it’s been about a week since I’ve talked about the good ole Domeister and it has been a busy week for him to say the least. As most of you are aware he is now “free” to go out for walks, sniff other dogs, play in the water and attend the local bars. Attend the local bars you say? Dogs don’t go to bars! Well this dog has, two of them now to be correct.

Our plan as soon as he received his 2nd batch of booster shots was to take Domino anywhere and everywhere we could to get him used to people and other animals. The people have been no problem, it’s actually turned into a problem with him wanting to go see every person in the visible distance. Dogs on the other hand are another story all together.

Our initial trip was “back home” for Domino to see his mom and dad dogs. We was afraid of them and peed right away. This was not good. We thought if he’d be good with any dog it’d be his mom/dad dog.

We then took Dom to the local “hot spot” for dogs Bellevue Park, it’s basically a large piece of land on the river with a pathway around the entire park and also an island where a lot of the dogs go out on and play. As we were walking around the park Dom would see another dog and try to hide. He then warmed up a bit to some dogs but still wimpered away. We then took him onto Topsail Island not knowing there’d be a large pack of dogs there, we were hoping to get him into the water. As we got further onto the island about 9 dogs of all different breeds came over to see him, he was scared shitless to say the least. Then a poodle attacked him. I picked Dom up and he was litterly trying to climb over my shoulder to hide. This definitely wasn’t a good experience for him.

After this we made it on the island and found a secluded spot to see if he’d go in the water, this wasn’t happening. We then started our trek off the island and what do we see, another Basset Hound. This guy was 12 years old and probably the best dog we’ve seen on our journeys, his name is Sarge. Dom and Sarge just laid down and stared at each other but still no close contact.

The next day I took Dom to Algoma University and to their new pub the Speak Easy. It was full of people for frosh and everyone loved him, they had him running around the bar and definitely wore him out.

We kept taking Dom for walks as the week has progressed and he’s getting better and better with dogs. While on the boardwalk he’d approach a dog to sniff it but only if the dog’s back was turned. As soon as that dog turned around Dom was hiding again. He’s now more confident however as we were just at Bellevue Park again two days ago and he approached a dog, sniffed it and started barking at it as well. So hopefully he keeps warming up.

On September 11 we took Domino out to Harmony Beach to see if he’d go in the water and get him used to that. We got him in a bit of the way on a sandbar but the water was pretty wavey so he didn’t like it when he was getting splashed. I think he had a good time however as he was full of sand, he kept digging his head in the sand and rolling in it, and this is after he came out of the water. We need to attempt to bathe him there to get most the sand out then give him a real bath when he got home. It was a good day for him.

And to conclude, just last night we took him out for a walk before my meeting for the Sault Orleans Benefit Concert. As we were waiting outside LopLops people were coming out to see him, mainly the workers. They then invited us in to show him off to everyone else so that puts Dom up now to visiting two bars. Maybe he’ll become the local mascot for drinkers or something.

I know I rambled on but that’s what you get when I limit my Domino updates. Maybe I’ll stop, maybe I won’t.

Oh my gosh, he is just so adorable! He’s grown up a lot since the last picture I saw :-)

It’s great that you are socializing him — so important, and something I seem to have missed when my basset was a babe (being somewhat anti-social myself!). Copper loves people, and doesn’t mind being sniffed up to a point…by other dogs, that is.

I’ll never forget when he was about three years old and went walk-about when the front door was left open. I was busy somewhere in the house, but when I heard him barking out front went to look. Turns out he didn’t get far because right out front he planted himself and started barking at something he had never seen — a boy on roller blades.

He had the same barking reaction to our neighbour, who had a beard, the first Copper had seen. The poor man thought he would make friends by giving Copper a biscuit, which Copper happily accepted. Thereafter, whenever Copper saw the neighbour he would bark…for another biscuit.

Yeah, he keeps getting bigger and bigger every day. On our two trips to the Bellevue Park he ran into the same man each time, this was about 4 days apart and the guy couldn’t believe how much bigger he got. It’s hard to tell his growth when you’re with him every day but the looking back at pictures and stuff it’s crazy — I promise to get these and video up soon.

I had a scare a couple of days ago as well. He was being a little “too” quiet so I went into the porch to see where he was outside and our side gate was open. I thought he definitely got out and had no clue what I was going to do to try to get him. But as soon as I opened the screen door I bonked him on the head as he was sleeping just below it. He’s a pretty good pup in that sense, I’m just hoping he stays that way.

Izzy did a LOT of submissive peeing as a puppy, every time Richard would come home from work. Fortunately, she outgrew it as she got older. Also, she’s the most social dog there is, but she still barks when anyone walks by our house. She’s just very protective of her family.

He’s getting huge. He’s beautiful! I just wanna hug him. Is it just my imagination or is the brown on his face/ears spreading some too?

  4. Cujo Says:

Kelli you are correct. He’s ears are probably about 25-35% brown now, a lot is still turning underneath so it all depends how you look at him. The top of his head is going too. It sort of looks like he went and had his hair dyed and now the roots are coming in.
