Can Someone Scratch My Back?

September 11 Domino the Basset Hound at the beach

Yesterday was Domino’s final “puppy shots” and all went pretty well. He’s now weighing in at a whopping 24.75 pds. He’s still been scratching quite a bit lately and has been since we’ve taken him home. So during his first visits to the vet we had the usual “flea check” where eggs were found so we received an application of FrontLine to put on him that is supposed to get rid of all the fleas etc. but as I just stated though, he’s still been scratching. The vet technician checked him out again for fleas yesterday but he’s clean so the scratching means one of two things; either he has lesions on him which I have to search for (I haven’t seen any) or he has allergies.

Who would of thought it, a family where members are allergic to dogs now might have a dog who is allergic to them or their surroundings. I basically now have to be a detective and figure out if it’s “indoor allergies” or “outdoor allergies”. Basically I for the indoor search I need to remove some of his favourite things for a couple of days at a time to see if it remedies the situation so things like his blanket and his bed are going to be gone (separate days however) to see if these affect him at all. I’m hoping not as he’s come quite accustomed to them. If it ends up being an outdoor allergy it’s seasonal and I’m not sure of any preventative measure for that. Anyone else have a dog with allergies that can give me some pointers?

On another front we had to buy a new “doggy crate” for him two days ago as he simply outgrew his old one. It’s been a week since we’ve taken him anywhere in the car so he hasn’t been in the crate but we decided to take him up to Hiawatha (a nature preserve type place with trails) for a walk. After I put him in the crate I realized how much he has grown as he was litterally bursting out of the thing. Before going for the walk we stopped and got him a full size crate which he should now grow into but it is still quite funny seeing him in the new one as he looks like a little puppy again.

As a side note, the picture above was taken back on September 11th when we had him at the beach so he’s grown a bit since then as well.

It could also just be dry skin. Izzy had really bad dry skin when she was a puppy. She would scratch big cuts into her tummy, it was so bad. She grew out of it, though. There’s medicated dog shampoo you can get for it, and probably something for skin allergies, too, for that matter.

Dom is such a cutie. I just wanna crawl through the monitor and hug your dog.

I’m hoping it’s something that can be resolved shortly anyway, I don’t like hearing him whine while he’s biting his back for 5 minutes at a time, it’s not the whining that annoys me it’s the fact that he’s uncomfortable or in pain.

Maybe you can crawl through the monitor and pick up his poop because that stuff sure packs a punch. OOFFF!

No thanks… between Izzy and Kiera, I’ve had more than my fair share of poop already. :)
