Better Than Crabs

For those of you still following hockey you know that one of the new rules they implemented this year was the “shoot out”. The whole purpose of this was to add some more excitement to the game and try to get teams to play for a WIN instead of sitting back and playing for a TIE. Basically after regulation time is done and the teams are tied they go to an overtime period and if still tied they go to a shootout. Easy as that.

Now in their first two meetings of the season the Toronto Maple Leafs and the Ottawa Senators have gone to the shoot out with Dany Heatley scoring the winning goal in each. Reading TSN I am greeted by this headline: “Quinn Not In Favour of the Shootout“. You see, Toronto is now complaining about how they “hate” the shootout basically because they lost in it twice now. But what are they really complaining about? If the teams tied they each get 1 pt, if you lose the shootout you still get your 1 pt, if you win the shootout you get an additional 1 pt for a total of 2 as if you won the game.

If the Leafs are so “mad” about losing in shootouts all the time maybe they should spend some time in practice on it or not miss the net which at least one shooter does for them every time.

I believe the Leafs might be mad that the “other team” is getting an additional point but really, the Leafs had the same amount of chance at winning the game as the Sens so quit your crying and play hockey.

A quote from Quinn in the article states “No other sport does it except for soccer.”

How many other sports have a gazillion ties in it? Football you’ll get the odd one in which is usually settled in OT unless the defense is spot on. Baseball goes extra innings but still don’t tie as much as hockey and play twice as many games, basketball is also rare for a tie and they get settled for the most part in their first overtime as well with it being a rare occassion to go to another OT.

So I say it again, suck it up Leafs and Leaf fans if you’re crying about their losses, they still get a point and the season is just beginning.
