Enter the Camera

It’s official, I’ve now entered the world of photography. It’s an attachment to the business and should go with it quite well. Now I just need to learn this new camera and setup and lenses and stuff and I should be good to go.

The camera I purchased is the Canon EOS 20D (a digital SLR camera). Along with that I got two lenses, a Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 and a Canon 50mm f/1.8. And to top it all off a 1 GB Compact Flash card to get me started on my photo taking ways.

I still need some accessories to make the camera perfect for the business but this should get me up and running at least to start. The next few days should be fun with trying to figure out how everything works and what exactly I’m doing, I’m new to the SLR area of photography but hoping I can pick it up in a short amount of time. So band folk, expect to see me at some shows with Mr. Camera annoying the crap out of you.

Things I’d like to get which if you really care you can buy for me:

  • Canon 420EX flash (unless you want to buy me a better one ;) ) I currently only have the built-in flash or you can substitute for the 580EX
  • another BP-511A Canon battery
  • another 1 GB Sandisk Ultra II Compact Flash card
  • a card reader, CF or multi-card
  • Manfrotto Tripod 190 (this was a suggestion from a camera person a couple months back I think I have the “version” number correct)
  • Tamron 70-300mm f4-5.6

If you can think of anything else that I’d need let me know, I’m sure I’m forgetting some stuff.

HAHA. I’ll try not to disappoint you guys, there’s so much reading, EGADS, I took it out yesterday and just flashed some quick shots of nothing to see how it worked and WOWSERS it rules, the fact you can just keep taking pictures continuously is awesome.

Way too used to the point nad shoot digital stuff where you push the shutter button, it waits 10 seconds, takes your picture than loads it for another 30. HAHA.

You should check out Raw Shooter Essentials (http://www.pixmantec.com/products/rawshooter_essentials.html) - tends to be a lot better than Adobe’s Carera RAW for handlign RAW files, particularly if you haven’t ugpraded to CS2 yet.

Eh… I cn add mroe useful comments than that. I had to get food otu of the oven (Mmmmm muffins) and got distracted and just hit submit.

You might wantn to pick up a polarizer for that 28-80 if you plan to do a lot of outdoor shooting. They can make a big difference in the right situations, though you can achieve the same effect in Photoshop with some work.

As for the battery, SterlingTek on eBay sells off-brand batteries for about $13 that work every bit as good. In fact, the battery I picked up from them actually holds a charge longer than the one from Canon. I’m pretty sure they’ll ship to Canada.

[...] On Saturday we took Domino to Hiawatha (a conservation area with trails and water and other “naturey” things) as it was supposed to be one of the last nice days before Old Mr. Winter comes and visits. It was also the first day with the new camera and in the initial stages, I love it. I still need work with it but I love it. [...]

We can knock the card reader off the list as I just bought the D-Link DUB 7-in-1 reader, it’s working good so far.
