I See Old People

I’ve completed two days of “training” at the new job. I’ve spent 1.5 of those days on location at the Davey Home (for those of you who don’t know, it’s an old age home or long term care home to be more precise). So far I haven’t even really touched the computer tech part of it but dealt with the other part of the job.
My employer took on the roll of also being in charge of the “patient tracker system” (that’s what I’m calling it for ease of use in the blog) and thus someone is needed full time to work the place and make sure everything is operating correctly etc. The tracking system does use computers so I guess that’s where I come in.
I think I’m getting the idea of it anyway. It’s what I’ve been working on the entire time, it always seems like there’s something wrong with something with it that you go nonstop. The basic system is each patient (or close to) has a badge that has an infrared light picked up by sensors in the ceiling which allows them to be tracked around the home. These badges also have buttons on them which they can press for aid etc and the computer monitor at the nurse’s station prompts who is ringing the badge and where they are located. That’s the general idea I guess. There’s wall mounts, pagers, lights and more badges but I won’t bore you with all of that.
Anyway I think the job will be alright and I’ve picked up the badge assigning/changing/troubleshooting pretty quickly as we’ve probably gone through about 50 badges in my short time there so far. I still need to look at the computer aspect/server stuff and get that under control as well as more of the tracking system etc. But I still have two weeks of training remaining so hopefully I’ll be good.
I’m also looking into A+ Certification which will confirm my full time employment as well as help my pay a bit. Hopefully I can figure the exams out for it. I’m still semi worried but we’ll see. I’m sure with a month or so of studying I should be fine.

Hmm, computers tracking movements of old people through a semi-mechanised home. Sounds like we have the makings of a good B Horror flick here.
What say you? Wouldn’t Nash be able to really run with this one?
