Snowboarding or Human Lawn Dart

I began writing this as a comment on West’s blog on a story about snowboarding. As you can see it ran on long and long and even longer so I decided to post it as a post.

This story happened about 3 years ago now I think… I can’t remember and don’t care to try to figure it out ;)

I went snowboarding (first time) and almost died. I received concussion X whatever as I’ve had so many now they are hard to keep track of. Basically I was “goofy foot” and my buddy teaching me was the “right way”. So was everyone else. We went to the “bunny hill” and attempted that most of the day, I never made it down once… I don’t ski either. I was able to go down
the hill backwards for some strange reason but as soon as I turned around I was planting my face into the snow.

After all these unsuccessful attempts and after some food the majority of the group decided to go to the main hill. SURE! I yelled forgetting that I didn’t know how to snowboard, I had a major headache (maybe onset of first concussion of the day) and I’m afraid of heights.

One scary/screamy chair lift ride later and about 1.5 hrs of me going down the main hill (once) I decided to go back to the “bunny hill”. You know it’s bad when the students from India are passing you on the hill and laughing at how many times that they have (I think they
were up to 6 or something like that).

I finally made it down the bunny hill in one piece. It was supposed to be my last trip down the hill but I thought I got the hang of it so I went back up. I was wrong. I caught an edge and became a human lawn dart performing a perfect headplant into a nice hard snowbank. My day was down, my concussion was full, I laid there for 20 minutes.

The school bus ride back to town wasn’t much fun either. Either the road was extremely bumpy or we went off roading as a “short cut” or the bus simply had no shocks. We made it back to the University in time for me to get in Jes’ van and to her house so I could get sick in her
washroom. I think this was the first time I was in her house as well.

What a great first impression.

And thus I have not snowboarded since.

I fondly recall that day….less fuzzy than you no doubt….you see I was little girl enough to realize that I couldn’t snowboard if my life depended on it, so I gave up rather quickly (I believe it was after a 45 minute descent of the bunny hill) and returned to more “normal” means of transportation….mainly those nice and sturdy downhill skiis (I can’t spell, so ignore any mistakes). Alas no concussions, but I remember passing you Curt at LEAST 8-10 times…..those were the days…..

That wasn’t the first time you were in my house. The first time you were in my house we were convincing my mom to make you a donkey costume for Halloween in 2002.

PS - That night his sickness was so bad I had to give him a toothbrush
