What’s In A Name?

For those hockey fans out there you are probably well aware that the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim are no more and next year they will become the Anaheim Ducks. A simple name change but a needed one as it drops the Disney persona off of the team no longer owned by Disney.
Following suit Dave Hodge, the elder statesman reporter for TSN decided to compile a list of other team names that should be changed for the coming year. Or names that should be dropped and given back to their rightful birth place etc. It’s a pretty good read, the article is titled: Keep the name changes coming. He simply starts off with the easy fix, elimate all team names that don’t end in S then moves from there.
This blog entry is dedicated to Darcy. Just for you.

Owners need their heads checked when they announce a team name. The NHL or the new NHL teams are horrible when it comes to naming teams. I dont care what a Thrasher is just change the name of the team or better yet get that team out of Nashville.
The American Major League Soccer is horrible for team names as well, with great names such as the Galaxy and the Mutiny.
Stop making a joke out of the league and the franchise and start giving teams names with character and credibility.

One thing I don’t like is what seems to be happening now with the NBA and WNBA. The WNBA franchises try to match their NBA teams name as well.
Sacramento: Kings (NBA), Monarhcs (WNBA)
Detroit: Pistons (NBA), Shock (WNBA)
Washington: Wizards (NBA), Mystics (WNBA)
Charlotte: Bobcats (new NBA), Hornets (old NBA), Sting (WNBA)
Houston: Rockets (NBA), Comets (WNBA), heck even the Astros (MLB)
Minnesota: Timberwolves (NBA), Lynx (WNBA)
And you get my point. Yes some of them represent the city car parts for Detroit, space stuff for Houston etc but the copying is kind of dumb. Especially when the other half of teams in the league don’t do it.
And another thing (touched on in the article above but works for basketball as well) when the team moves don’t keep it’s name especially when the name represented the area/location of the team. Ex. LA Lakers — what? I don’t see any lakes in LA. Minneapolis however where the team relocated from has it’s fair share. Memphis Grizzlies say what? Now BC and Vancouver where the team came from it makes sense. And the list goes on and on.
But enough ranting.

I want a team to call itself The Cougars and have their logo a hot 35 year old woman. That would be funny
