A New Journey

This past Saturday (Feb 4) Jes and I decided to take Domino for a walk through the Fort Creek Conservation Area. Neither of us had been there before and Domino hasn’t been there either but I think you guys could have figured that one out on your own. For starters, that place is huge. WOWSERS. We were really unsure of what we were doing when we got there but we hopped out of the van, grabbed Dom by his leash and found a path. We simply started following the thinly packed path (single file only here) to see where it would take us — and it just kept on taking us. About twenty to thirty minutes into our walk we ran into two unleashed dogs and one sort of attacked Dom. He’s still a wimp and cowers away but really if your dog is agressive try to keep it close if you know other dogs might be on the paths with you.

We continued walking and ended up coming to a fork in the road. Which way should we take? Which way should we take? Well we did like Toucan Sam and followed Domino’s nose. We let him lead the way and he was actually quite funny for the most part. He wanted to be ahead of us but if the area looked like it was covered by a lot of trees or if snow was falling off the trees he’d cower behind us so that he’d be walking between Jes and I along the path. About 45 minutes into our journey we decided that Dom was tired out enough that he wouldn’t run into the bush and stick close by so we unleashed him. He behaved exceptionally well running ahead of us on the path a little ways but never out of eyesight. He’d sit down and wait for us to get close again then he’d begin his exploration once more.

If you’ve never been through the trails at Fort Creek I highly recommended it especially if you have a dog. The trails (in the winter anyway) are skinny enough for you and your litlte furry companion to walk alone and you are never really in eyesight of many people although you will run into some along the way. I preferred it over Bellevue Park as the paths were more adventuresome, especially for a Basset Hound. Bellevue Park is pretty much a flat piece of land and you’re able to see everyone out there with you. Fort Creek it’s more like you’re in the wilderness exploring, climbing and going down hills. It was quite fun. It was a long journey (an hour and a half) but still fun. If you do go make sure to bring water or another liquid with you, for you and your furry friend as it does get a little tiring out there and dress appropriately. We were lucky and Saturday was quite mild for the beginning of February and this made the trip all the more fun.

If anyone has maps of the area (if they exist) and wouldn’t mind sending them along that’d be great as we really had no clue where we were going and what path led where etc.

A couple of fun moments happened on the trip. I was walking with Domino on the leash and we approached a large downhill part to the path leading to a bridge. Domino loves to run up and down hills and me with running shoes on wasn’t the best of situations. For those of you not really keeping tabs Dom is up to about 45-50 pounds of pure muscle in his little Basset Hound body so he’s quite strong (we were thinking of putting him in the Bon Soon dog pull contest — I’m sure he would have done awesome). Anyway to the point — as we got closer to the hill Dom started to run and I tried to stop him because I really didn’t feel like running down a hill — I didn’t need to — basically I put my feet flat and Dom pulled me all the way down the hill as if I was skiing or dog sledding but without the dog. Such a good pup. When we finally approached the bridge Dom definitely didn’t want to cross he just looked at the bridge and stood frozen. Jes and I were on it trying to make him come but he wasn’t trusting us for the first bit. The bridge was one of those metal see through type bridges (okay I suck at describing it) but Domino was having nothing to do with it as he thought he’d fall down (cute pup). Eventually he made it on and we continued our long journey through the wilderness.

Hopefully we’ll get back there next weekend.

Also sorry for million of different thoughts all rammed together in this post but I wanted to get this out there and more and more info just kept popping into my head. BAH to proof reading is what I say.

That’s the website for Fort Creek Conservation area. Sorry, no digital maps. Go to the Sault Ste. Marie Regional Conservation Authority office for maps. Last I heard, they sell them cheap or give them away. You may want to call first, before driving all the way out there, though, just to make sure they have a trail map.

Another fun doggy place to go is the Kinsmen park, formerly known as Hiawatha Park. It’s especially nice in the fall.

Yeah, Kinsmen (Hiawatha) Park is where we usually brough Domino, well in Oct/Nov anyway. Then when the snow came it’s all cross country snow trails now and I don’t think puppies are allowed there.

Fort Creek was definitely a good outting though and I think we’re going back on Saturday. So if anyone wants to see a basset hound puppy camp out at Fort Creek ;)

Unfortunately I’ll be rehearsing my vagina that day.

Now there’s an excuse you don’t hear every day! LOL
