A Pleasant Surprise

Jes has been going back and forth and changing her mind a million times on what we were going to do with the kitchen floor. Ceramic tile, linoleum, bamboo, carpet, other flooring material etc etc. We were never quite sure what to put down but we knew that the linoleum there currently had to come up. Jes really wanted a hardwood floor in the kitchen when we first moved in and we were hoping that underneath the linoleum that the hardwood which ran throughtout the rest of the house also made it’s way into the kitchen. This didn’t seem like the case. Until yesterday…
Jes‘ dad ripped up the kitchen floor and there was some sort of paper adhesivey thing which the floor was installed on. Under this paper type substance to everyone’s surprise. Hardwood floor! I think it’s California Red Maple or was it Mississippi Mud Pine or maybe Appalachain Blue Birch. Okay, I forgot what the wood was called but it is a hardwood. It’s a little thicker than the boards in the rest of the house and a different type (this much I know — Jes will come in and let us know the exact kind I’m sure).
Now the plan is to get that paper crap up, sand the kitchen floor to hopefully get it into a good shape then either stain it a darker colour and verathane or simply just verathane (or is it spelt varathane, crazy word).
Either way, we now have hardwood floors throughout the entire house (sans bathroom) and couldn’t be happier.
So who wants to come help?
EDIT: This just in, the floors are Douglas Fir. I was close ![]()

Good call Anita. Maybe we’ll do before and after pictures of that floor. The other floors are coming along quite nicely as well.

Might not be as good as we expected, it looks like the floors are just 2×4s - at least that’s what they look like right now. Under some of the gunk is stained wood and then in other spots it looks different. Dad is taking the crap off this afternoon so I guess we’ll know by tonight what the floors are looking like underneath.
Fingers crossed!!!
