School Day 2 - Hey Everybody Look At Me

Last night was Domino’s second day in obedience class and he did much better than the first day. This could probably be attributed to a couple of factors, the first being the instructor we had this week (who is now the regular instructor) was a lot better than the one we had last week and she would take the time out to make sure the dogs were “getting” what we were trying to do instead of just rushing through everything. We also moved Domino into the furthest corner so he was away from everyone watching on the side, the audience if you will.
He was up to his old tricks though. For a lot of the class he was sitting nicely but started whining/howling trying to get the attention of anyone he could. After he was fed up with that game he decided to laydown all stretched out and once again whine/howl until everyone looked at him. He certainly plays it up for the audience.
This week we were positioned beside a five month old Bichon Frise who Domino wanted to play with but the kennel club has a rule that the dogs aren’t allowed to sniff each other. They are dogs that’s what they do! But I guess the non-sniffing keeps their attention on doing what they are supposed to be doing.
There are still some things that Domino doesn’t quite get yet and I don’t really care if he does, it’d be nice but not a necessity I guess. The dogs are supposed to sit then down (laydown), sit, stand. Domino does the sit to perfection, needs LOTS OF WORK for down, then sits and stands no problem. Also he’s quite “slow” on the leave it command. Basically we put the treat in front of him (mmm tasty hotdogs) and he grabs it or tries to grab it you could say anything to him and he doesn’t care there is food right there. It’s more of a “show” trick anyway.
Now to the bad news :(. Domino hurt himself on Sunday afternoon and I’m not sure how. My dad called me at the new place saying that when he got home Dom was limping around and not putting any weight at all on his back foot/leg. When I got home he was doing a little better and was using the leg to walk but was visibly limping. He was doing better on Monday and that’s why we brought him to obedience class. We told the instructor about his leg and she said she’d keep an eye on him and make sure we weren’t working him too hard. I think the standing for an hour or so without being able to laydown and take all the weight off the leg affected him a bit as he was up frequent times during the night and limping quite a bit more. Jes is taking him to the vet this morning (I believe he should be there/on the way there as I’m writing this). Hopefully all is fine with him and it’s an easy fix. Poor Domino.
