A Geeky Road Map

To begin this isn’t a road map for cars or streets or roads but a route I’d like to follow as my free time opens up. The house is nearing completion — we hope to be moving in next weekend — this would free up time after work/weekends/etc. I’d like to do some general web stuff in there as well but that’ll come and won’t be considered part of my free time road map. So let me begin.

Update the Blog.
I want to update the software running the blog. Currently it’s powering behind WordPress 1.5.2 but I’d like to upgrade it to the newer WordPress 2.0.2 or even yet possibly switch it over to something completely new and that being Typo.

With this update I also want to redo the theme. I never really did “much” with the theme in the first place but I’m thinking wider. This simple change will allow mainly for better picture size in the posts and maybe better readibility but it’s only a minor option. I’d also like to install LightBox 2.0 which would clear up all picture problems without doing a width thing — I think anyway, I need to look into it a little more.

Development.
I’ve gone stale again. I like to code and I haven’t in a bit basically because I’ve been super busy with everything else. I also want to start new and try to pick up some new languages/packages and see if I can add that to my arsenal. I’ve been a little slow on jumping on the “hype” band wagon but I’m ready to try it out now just to see what can happen. What does all this mean you ask? For starters I’d like to start programming using Ruby On Rails — there’s a lot of buzz flying around it right now (and for the past year I guess) so why shouldn’t I give it a shot? To do this I’d really like to get my hands on the book Agile Web Development With Rails as it seems to be the book for learning Rails development.

Sticking on the web front I’d also like to try out and use some Javascript packages including Prototype, Behaviour and Scriptaculous. I guess this would include my entry into the world of AJAX.

Right now these are all some minor goals I have. I have some bigger ones where I hope to use some of the skills learned from above so we’ll see what happens there.

For those of you reading this who are completely lost with all the buzz terms I’m sorry and I’ll get back to my stupid posts shortly. For those reading it and understand every word — please give me your feedback on what you think of the languages/packages etc that I listed above.

EDIT: Come to think of it this isn’t a road map at all and more of a “I’d like to do this” sort of thing. Stupid work changing my thought process.
