New Computer Decision Part II
Posted in Business / Geek / General by CujoApril 29th, 2006 - 7:29 PM
If you remember a recent post where I was debating between a new iMac or a custom built machine I have made my descision (sort of).
I’m going with a Mac. The only question now however is do I go for an iMac (desktop) or a MacBook Pro (laptop).
Specs
iMac 20″
2.0 GHz Core Duo (processor)
2 GB RAM
250 GB 7200 SATA (hard drive)
ATI Radeon X1600 128 MB (video)
Complete Specs
MacBook Pro 17″
2.16 GHz Core Duo
2GB RAM
120 GB 5200 SATA
ATI Mobility Radeon X1600 256 MB
Complete Specs
There’s different reason for each one I guess. How portable will I be etc. I think I’m leaning MacBook Pro but still unsure.
Anyone have an educated hint of help.
Also I’ll be getting the same software for each so that’s not a problem either.

As we all now, I’m NOT educated in macs (hell, I’m barely educated at all), but wouldn’t a desktop be “safer” than a laptop? I mean if something does go wrong once the warranty’s done, it’s a cheaper fix, no? That said, I don’t think I could live without my laptop. There’s something to be said about the ability to blog from the bathroom…

Eww, their both pretty nice, but I’d suggest takign the laptop, mainly because of convience. You can take those projects of yours tow ork, when your at work, ont he bus, on plane, etc. Where ever you go, your tools, your projects, and everything you need is on access, and only limited to the user.
But heck, if the decision is that hard for you, just use a coint o make your decision. 50-50 chance and it doesn’t leave an im-between marginal choice, its either one or the other. Well, Good Luck with your choice.

have u considered some of the old problems of the macbook? here i’m thinking of the whine and heat issues. i don’t know if those problems have carried over to the new MBP but it’s worth doing a little research over.

I just started reading about them. Trying to find info on the new 17″ and it’s not going to great — I’m still thinking of going with it though — it’s the lead candidate and if you heard my current computer I’m sure a little whine wouldn’t be much (plus they are working on it and it’s an on/off issue, some people have it some don’t — of course you hear of the ones who do the most).

I’ve been on the Apple forums on and off today.
17″ MacBook Pros haven’t arrived to anyone yet so we don’t know of problems. 15″ MBPs which were having the problems were the “first batch”, the “second batch” have that supposedly fixed so I’m hoping they took what they learned with the 15″ and made it successful in the 17″ (this seems to be the concensus on the boards).

Are you sure you want a computer that has a potential for problems? Especially when it’s costing so much? Are there problems associated with the other one at all?

Jes: its too late. the allure of the macbook has ensnared young CO into its web. all hope is lost!

Not yet, the debate is still on. I’m hoping they’ll be okay. I’m going in tonight to see if they ordered for me today. If they did I’m going to pray for the best. If they didn’t I might put a hold on it for a couple of days to see if people get the MBP in their hands to see how they are reacting.
