Sunset Switch

With some major help from blinking8s the problem with the sunset pictures have been solved and we should be good to go from now on.
The before picture.

The after picture more closely to how it was shot.

Going through the process I was also informed that images will appear slightly different on Mac monitors compared to Windows monitors which was something interesting as well and found out how to view both. Maybe future work (when I have more time) will lead me to perfecting my images in post-processing to get them to look similar in both.

Nice work! I had thought they were great shots to begin with, but the “after” picture is definitely a better looking sunset.

Yeah, kind of weird how it worked. Also as a point of clarification I didn’t photoshop the images at all. The problem was with the colour profiles and how Photoshop was saving them. Shooting with the DSLR the pictures were in the ProRGB profile, when saving that for the web it got stripped out and the picture resulted as the first. To change it I had to convert the profile to sRGB and do a normal save and voila we get the “real” picture. Freaking colour profiles.

I’ve had my experience with colour profiles. Fun bit of learning, eh?
About the monitors, though - I’ve notice even on just PCs, the end result of the image will be different depending on if it’s an LCD, CRT, and even different brands of CRTs. For example, the Library computer monitors (even without the anti-glare privacy screens) seem to darken images.

Yeah I knew the general differences between LCD/CRT as Jes has an LCD and I was always on a CRT and saw things I’d develop would look just a bit different. Photoshop actually has a feature built into it where you can see how the Gamma will be different on Windows vs. Mac. If you go to View -> Proof Colors and select that (turn it on) then go to View -> Proof Setup then select the Windows RGB and the Mac RGB from the options you can see the differences. It’s actually some pretty neat stuff.

You can set the Mac to have the same gamma, etc. as a PC monitor if you want.
