High Holy Days played Friday night at the Speak Easy following Bondar (you can see Bondar’s photo post here). Unfortunately about half the audience left after Bondar’s set which made the bar seem thinner than it was.
I was sort of dismayed however when High Holy Days stopped their set after about thirty minutes of playing. I know the bar seemed empty and that could be upsetting having traveled just to play the show to find out nobody was really interested but they were being played to play so why not play.Ã? Go full out, have a good time, try new stuff.Ã? There shouldn’t be any worry of offending anyone because anybody left was more than likely there to hear you and hear a full show.Ã? I’ve seen a lot of local guys play to near empty bars and just keep playing throughout the night because they are there to play their music, if anyone is in the bar they’ll play for that person, at least their music is getting out there.
This wasn’t the first time something like this happened with a major Canadian band either.Ã? When the Salads played here at the end of July I was also shocked with how quick their set was.Ã? And the bar was full for them.Ã? If I had the opportunity to do something I love for a living for any number of people I’d do it as long as I could before I wore out.
Even though the set was short their energy was still pretty high for the most part.Ã? They were also gracious enough to allow me to take photos so I have no complaints with them.Ã? This is only the 2nd national band I’ve shot and any chance I can to shoot more is always welcome.
To High Holy Days, thanks for coming, thanks for letting me take some photos and I’m sorry more people didn’t show out to hear you.

When Billy Bragg played here last week he played several encores saying “Why not? I have nothing else to do.” He really let us know he was having a good time (loved his five minute stories between each song). Mind you…he’s Billy Bragg, so of course the show was sold out. Even if it hadn’t been, I expect he would have played to his fullest.
But you know…I realized that night a “show” is more than music. He put on a total performance, made us a part of it, made us feel he was happy to be there. Best show I’ve been to maybe ever.
If I’d been looking forward to High Holy Days and they shorted their set, giving off a general feeling of unhappiness, I don’t suppose I would be leaving happy. Not the best way to gain new fans…even though, yeah, I know it must have been tough for them. But hey, suck it up and be professional boys. We’ve all been there (writers don’t draw the biggest crowds).

i went to the show the last time high holy days played in the soo… at the time, my friend knew a couple of the guys in the band - both of whom are no longer in the band (the singer is the only person left from the band configuration that played here before) …… anyhoo - i seem to remember that show being really short. i enjoyed myself, the band was highenergy and tight - but it seemed like they left you wanting more…. and then didnt come back until now - which is like 2 years later. thats a big time to leave someone wanting more - too big - i didnt even go to this show. i think maybe its just the way this band it - their sets are short. i dont know why though. (ps, im tired, sorry for the disjointedness of my comment, blame nucomm & algoma university for making me this way).
