To MySpace or To Save Face

Well here’s a general question to you, my loyal readers.Ã? Should I set up a MySpace page?
Am I for a MySpace page — no.Ã? Do I need one, no not really.
Why am I thinking about one?
I’m moving forward with my photography more and more and looking at shooting bands more and more and not just the regular bands where I know the guys and they know my photography.Ã? I’ve expanded out, shot some local guys who don’t know who I am and also shot some national bands.Ã? The thing is, currently it’s not prevalent that I do photography.Ã? These bands I shoot have MySpace pages and a lot have my pictures up — whether they asked to put them up or not, they have them up.
Now should I create a page just to accumulate a friends listing of bands and have some way of diverting them to what I actually do.
MySpace is the plague to me — I hate it, but do I need it?
I’m also currently redeveloping my main site to promote the photography more so maybe that will help.
Let me know what you think.

I wish I could offer some good advice, but since I’ve never had any dealings with MySpace (and choose not too), I can’t. Sorry. However, you could update your watermark on your published pictures to include your main website address… Just a thought. It seems that you have tons of stuff on your plate, so why bother with something else to have to worry about. *I’m half drunk, so this may not be the best advice in the world.

HAHA. At least you qualified your comment with the I’m drunk comment at the end.
I too prefer to stay away from MySpace just not sure if it’ll work as a networking tool. When the new site is up I’m thinking I will put the address down as a watermark on the pictures but I also don’t want to invade my photos with giant watermarks, do I put my name, year, web site, do I just put web site etc.
I definitely want my redesign up shortly though to fully compliment the photography, I think it’s sort of hidden in the dark that I do that but it’s what is leading me into other areas.
Wow I’m not drunk and I think your comment made more sense than what I just said.

Well the two things to consider is is it worth it? MySpace tends to be addicting to alot of people and it wastes a crap load of time. Plus the general majority of people who use myspace design their pages like garbage, so you’ll have to get used to looking at Crapola. But ever since I added my URL to my MySpace page, my traffic increased by 40%..
Not that I support MySpace but theirs a vast amount of user based economics built around it. One of my acquantences, has a home business that he’s built around selling MySpace clothing apparel, and boy if hes not making money then I’m a Grizzly Bear that was born on Jupiter.
MySpace is defiently a great way to go its free PR for the masses and not just for techies, but for hillbilly Sue and the average joe, everyone uses it. How often is it, that you stumble across a company wher eyou can advertise and easily distribute your content freely. Well, heres your chance, your opportunity to freely distribute your work and portfolio to the masses.

From a Myspace user… Dude, where else can you find truck loads of questionable lesbians (who all seem to be over 85 years old and look a lot like that girl on the cover of Penthouse last month…), webcam girlies, and truly kick-you-in-the-ass bands? Yes, there is a whole icky, creepy, “networking for friends” side to it. But, and this is a big But, I’ve found its a fine way to be contacted by folks I have lost touch with (ones I actually wanted to remain in touch with - Oy,vey). And the bands, Lord, the bands. I have encountered more fine music on MySpace than I could in a month of obsessively listening to CBC or NPR. It starts with finding the bands you already know, and then the other indie acts come looking for you. I am serious on this, man. In the months I have been a part of this MySpace thing, I cannot stress the amount of truly amazing music that I have encountered. I’m sure there is some crap out there, but I haven’t bumped into it. Yet. So, for encountering new tunes and new artists, yay MySpace. For getting some really cool advice and help on some stuff, yay MySpace groups. For finding friend requests from Holly who only charges $4.95 a month for access to her webcam, yay, MySpace.
Anyway, ’nuff said.

Tarellel — you’re a grizzly bear? Holy crap, a typing grizzly bear, you don’t need MySpace you need a manager to get you some publicity.
I see the “benefits” of the thing but I’ve been totally against it for the longest time. I know I wouldn’t update my page at all but it’s sort of the effort to just have me linked up on all the other sites if people actually go through. Sort of the 6 Degree’s of Curt’s photography or something stupid like that.
Rob — you make a lot of valid points. But like I stated above, it’d be more of a way to just send people to my real sites, my page wouldn’t be updated and probably go stale very quickly. But if I can get the incoming links to my sites it may be okay.
I think the main thing is as a “professional web designer and photographer” is it losing face to get an ugly as hell myspace page just to try to get some hits to my sites in order to possibly turn over some business.

I use my MySpace pages exclusively to drive traffic to my website and blog. I think MySpace is crap in every way, but it does work to get people to your sites and to network a bit. However, let’s not forget that it is now owned my Rupert Murdoch. Yuk. A usefull evil I guess.
