Debate: Web site or website

Being a man of the Web this thought has occurred to me. More recently however because I’m redesigning my business site and use the term web site often. However I also see and know a lot of people use website as the proper spelling.

Also being a man of the Web I decided to check out Wikipedia’s offering on the subject and it seems like I am not the only one who doesn’t really know how the word is spelt. An interesting fact however is that on the Wikipedia site it states that academia, dictionaries such as Oxford and Meriam-Webster, and Reuters (among others) prefer the spelling of Web site as the Web is the identity for the World Wide Web. This is sort of my understanding for breaking it down as well, although I usually keep both lower cased as in web site. Does this rate me as an academic?

Further more Canadian dictionaries (wait a second, I’m Canadian!) such as the Canadian Oxford Dictionary and Canadian Press Stylebook list it as website (one word) but also has web page.
So now I’m confused. Are us crazy Canucks breaking away from the pack and making our own spelling? I could understand if the European spelling is also website as that would tie in with our colour/color, honour/honor etc way of spelling such words but I haven’t found any concrete evidence as such (aka I’ve only really read the Wikipedia entry and it’s too late to look somewhere else right now).

So what do you use? Does it matter to you?

Is it Web site, web site or website? Are Web site and web site basically the same thing?

It is quite the geeky conundrum don’t you think?

I say “website”. I think it’s faster to type and that’s the only reason.
