Today was the home opener for the Thunderbird basketball teams of Algoma University. Algoma U is where I received my fine education and the teams actually came to existance in my 2nd or 3rd year at the school (I can’t remember). Thing sure have changed since that time. They have these new spiffy blue jerseys (the old ones were maroon and yellow). They also win games now too!
The woman’s team was started the season 4-0. I think when I watched the games in the first 3 seasons our total combined wins (men’s and women’s) didn’t top 4. The women won their game today by about 30 pts. Very impressive effort with the 2nd stringers playing a large portion of the 2nd half (halftime score was 36-7 I believe).
The men’s team had a couple of tough losses to start the season (so I was told) however they dominated this game with a final score of 90-53 (or something like that I forget). The team seems to have a lot more depth this year and the new coach seems to know what his team can do. In the past I used to watch as the men would hold up good for the first half then die out in the second. The new coach however was doing a lot of quick subs in the first half keeping everyone fresh and in the game.
This was my first time shooting sports and I basically sat in one position in the stands using my telephoto lens. The results aren’t the greatest — I’ll admit that — some more movement by me may aid in the results. A nice shiney sports lens would definitely help with the situation. If we had some major sports teams here it would be a great area of photography to get into but we simply don’t and the demand for it isn’t there (at least I don’t think it is).
