Gorillapod - Perfect Gift for Photographers

Gorillapod

Today Jes surprised me with an early birthday present as we were going to bring the dogs to the park and it would have come in handy but the rain changed our plans.

Pictured above is the Gorillapod from Joby. The Gorillapod is in essence a tripod but with the traditional tripod thinking turned on its head.

You are able to set the Gorillapod up like a traditional tripod (it doesn’t stand as tall however) but you are also able to hang it, bend it and wrap it around your surroundings to take unique hands free photos. Match the Gorillapod up with a remote shutter release and I’m sure the picture taking fun will be endless.

The Gorillapod comes in three sizes to fit any type photographer. There is the original Gorillapod for point-and-shoot cameras, who doesn’t have a point-and-shoot now? Then there’s the Gorillapod SLR for the more advanced users with a SLR camera and some simple lenses and the Gorillapod SLR-Zoom which allows you to attach your zoom lenses to it (extra weight) and the site also says you can attach it to your current tripod as well.

The Gorillapod I received was the SLR version but Jes wanted to get me the SLR-Zoom version as it supports the extra weight of some of my bigger lenses so we are returning it in hopes of getting the upscale model. When it comes in I’ll bring it out to various locations and post a review of it.

But based on the pictures and coolness factor alone, if you’re thinking of getting a present for any occassion for the photographer you know, I think the Gorillapod is a great choice. The Joby site features many more photos of the various Gorillapods in action so check it out.

Also for those of you out there thinking “Damn, I didn’t get him a birthday present” have no fear, my birthday is still a month away so you have plenty of time to pick something up.

Thanks slackhopper but I have it no more. Jes returned it today and she said she’s “not sure” if she’s going to upgrade it for me. The return occurred while I was making the post. Looks like I’ll have to wait until my real birthday to find out now.
