Just Installed: WordPress 2.1

Today WordPress 2.1 was released. If you do not know what that is, it is the blog engine that runs this site. The 2.1 release was a major release and the install went without a hitch so if anyone is tentative on the install have no worries and install away.

Also just to mark the occassion I’ll list the plugins I am currently using as some people are insterested in that:

Akismet: this is the built-in (default) spam protection service for WordPress. I’d be dead without it. Stats of this writing state: 11,519 blocked spam since installation (I think I installed it 3 or 4 months ago).

FeedBurner Feed Replacement: great tool for managing your feeds.

Google Sitemaps: this will create a sitemap for your blog, listing all of your posts, page, etc. It is used for search engine optimization, mainly Google. It helps your pages get indexed in the search engine.

Lazy Gallery: runs my photo gallery. The link seems to be dead that I have.

Related Posts: at the end of your post it will list a specified number of possible related entries. This helps to get users to move throughout your site.

SH-Autolink: this plugin seemed like a lifesaver at the time. You specify words you would like it to automatically link saving you the time from creating links for the common words you use (for me this is generally musician names). However, I stopped using it for the most part because it would conflict with a lot of my gallery links that I would post as it would find an instance of the name in my link and relink it to the web site instead of the photo gallery.

Subscribe to Comments: another posts for holding readers. To my knowledge no-one is using this who visit my site.

Ultimate Tag Warrior: this is a great plugin for more search engine traffic as well as traffic from Technorati. I have general categories for my posts but I can also tag them with other words more commonly used throughout the post to increase hits for that particular term.

WP-Cache: as I’ve started to use more picture laden posts I was in need of a plugin that would assist with server load. Enter WP-Cache. On the first visit to a page it becomes cached until part of the page is updated (a new comment) then it is recached. This increases load time for those heavy picture posts and assists with the overall experience for everyone.

WP-ContactForm: you always want to hear from your adoring fans and some fans do not want to respond through the comments so I have a contact form plugin. This saves you the time from coding your own form and is easier to set up. My personal programming pet peeve are forms/contact forms.

And that is the complete list of the plugins I’m currently using. My descriptions for them are simply that, for more details on each one visit their own site or install them and test them out for yourselves.

EDIT: And hours later I find a new very useful plugin. Ã? It is called WP Video Plugin and it allows you to embed videos into your post with great ease.Ã? The newer version of WordPress was giving me some problems over at I’m A Mac but after downloading this plugin problems solved.Ã? You insert a video by simply typing ["youtube" id] (without the quotes) where id is the YouTube video id.Ã? Now I don’t think it gets any easier than that.

I personally prefer TextPattern over WordPress, but I have checked out the recent WP release and it seems pretty amazing. I just wish TP had Akismet built into it, Ive tested it with a few of my past projects and it’s an amazing tool. And coupled with the ever popularized WP it’s an unmatched team.

I’ve never used anything other than WordPress. It does what I need and I don’t want to go through any assumed hassle of switching to something else (for the time being anyway).

Is Ultimate Tag Warrior working fine with the Wordpress 2.1?

    Thomas:

I believe it is. I don’t add links to my tags created by it so it’s hard for me to fully judge. Looking at my RSS feed however the tags do appear in there. But I’m not sure if they are showing up after I edited the entry because I forgot to enter the tags or if the tags were there from the beginning.
