Mini Experiment: Nighttime Photography

Pictured above is the Norgoma at the dock by the Roberta Bondar Pavillion. The Norgoma is now a museum ship that makes crazy ghost noises when you’re freaking yourself out walking around alone at 1 AM.
I started a mini little experiment for myself in night photography. Working night shifts at my new job is perfect for this as I walk around usually between 12:30 and 2 AM on my lunch break trying to find things to shoot and trying to figure out what settings work best on the camera.
Here is the Norgoma again. These shots are from my second walk about adventure. I shot them at 100 ISO which was good but forgot to shoot in RAW - another thing I’m trying to experiment in. It was cold this night as well. I should learn to check the weather before I decide to walk around with all my camera gear in the middle of the night.
Above is the International Bridge connecting us to Michigan. The photos lost a lot of detail when I resized them down to fit this blog. I’m thinking an alternate means of portfolioing my photography is going to be needed to remedy this. Stay tuned.
This is the Sault Ste. Marie, MI water front. The large tower shown is the Tower of History. I’ve never been so don’t ask me any questions. Again this looks a lot better a bit larger.
This is a freighter I was lucky enough to catch locking through the Soo Locks on my first adventure out for night photography. Being the somewhat forgetful guy that I am I set my camera to shoot in RAW + JPEG but left the ISO at 1600 instead of bringing it down to 100. I’m sure a better ISO would make this picture even better. I still like it quite a bit though for a first attempt.

I actually really like the last one as-is. It’s sort of glowy and otherwordly.
I like this new experiment of yours.

Thanks Manda, the glowy look and things like that are how I shot it. If you see it larger there’s a lot of noise in the image mainly from the high ISO setting making a print of it not looking as great. That’s where I’m disappointed with it.

did you break out the guerillapod (sp?) for this shoot?

I did not. I used my regular tripod which I came to hate.
And it’s gorillapod like the animal not the mercenary.
