Photo Adventure: Chippewa Falls The First Visit

Sunday afternoon we drove North to Batchewana Bay and more specifically Chippewa Falls. I’ve wanted to shoot the falls since last summer and this is the first time we had the chance to go up. The falls were not free flowing like they would be after the spring melting but it was still an experience anyway. Above you see a butterfly. I stumbled across a number of butterflies while walking out on some rocks finding a good location to shoot what waterfalls still exhisted.

This is about midway up the falls at one of the levels. We didn’t venture higher than this so I’m not sure if there were more falls or not. One word of advice for anyone out there - don’t wear flip flop sandals if you plan on climbing and walking across large rocks to find photography locations. I tried using a longer shutter release to get those almost surreal looking shots you see appear in all the fancy photography show off sites but the conditions were not ideal for it. Basically don’t go in the middle of the afternoon even if it is overcast, go at dusk or dawn and hope for the best.

One more butterfly shot to cap off the post. This is actually two butterflies joined together doing what butterflies do or maybe this is just one butterfly. I can’t remember. I like the symmetry of the image but was a bit shakey with my macro lens and didn’t have a good grip on the rocks.
As will become the custom what I consider to be the best shot is on white matte.

Nice flutterbys.
If you think the long exposures/waterfalls is something you want to do often, you’d be well off to invest in a neutral density filter. Supposedly it helps a lot. I haven’t had a chance to do much with it, not a lot of running water around here.
